When dealing with waste, the South Waikato District Council regards recycling with particular importance. The South Waikato Achievement Centre holds the contract for road side collection of recyclable material from residents and commercial operators.
During the period 2005/2006 the team at the Achievement Centre collected 1961 tonnes of waste, which would otherwise have ended up in landfill. Of this, 1230 tonnes were from kerb side collections. This indicates that residents are conscious of the need to recycle as much as possible. Recycling is an important step towards reducing landfill volumes and Council encourages people to make use of this free service.
In addition to the kerbside collections, there are public recycling depots at both landfill entrances, South Waikato Acheivement Centre on Thompson Street, at Waotu, Dunham Park on State Highway 1, in Arapuni at the Pioneer Crescent Reserve and at the Atiamuri Hall on State Highway 30 on the way to Rotorua.
Tokoroa landfill site also recycles car bodies, whiteware and small amounts of steel. Putaruru landfill site also recycles whiteware and steel.
Kerbside collection of recyclable material takes place fortnightly in Putaruru, Tirau and Arapuni. In Tokoroa the dates are Wednesday and Thursday in conjunction with normal garbage removal. Listed below are the dates for the remainder of the year:
