About Environment Waikato
 Environment Waikato (EW) is one of 12 regional councils in New Zealand . The Environment Waikato team are responsible for managing and protecting land, water, soil, air, coastal and geothermal resources in the central North Island . It also manages land transport, biosecurity and civil defence.
EW's work focuses on:
- environmental regulation, education, consultation and co-ordination.
- water quality management, river control and coastal activities.
- control of possums and other pests.
- preparing for civil defence emergencies.
- co-ordinating road transport in the Waikato area.

What areas are included in the Environment Waikato region?
New Zealand 's Waikato Region stretches from the top of the Coromandel Peninsula and Pukekohe in the north, to the slopes of Mount Ruapehu in the south. The boundaries have been drawn based on water catchment areas.
There are eight local authority districts, one city and parts of three other districts contained in EW's borders. Refer to the map for the boundaries of the individual districts.
Figures from the 2001 census indicate that 357,726 people live in the Waikato Region. Around 75 per cent of these people live in urban areas. The Waikato Region contains:
- the Waikato River , the longest river in New Zealand
- large native and exotic forests
- New Zealand 's most important geothermal systems
- the largest lake ( Lake Taupo )
- internationally significant wetlands
- Tongariro National Park .
