Southtech is a separate business unit of the South Waikato District Council. The unit acts as an internal consultancy for all engineering and technical issues. It provides Council with professional advice and services for many Council activities. The Asset Management Division has an agreement with Southtech to supply these services to Council. One of the main reasons behind this system is so that Southtech can secure subsidised funding from Transfund for roading works. Transfund gets its funding from road users by way of excess tax and road use charges.
 The activities supported by Southtech include roading, stormwater, sewage and water supply and all work agreed by Council in its Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP) annual forecasting process. The unit is responsible for the investigation, surveying, design, construction and maintenance of most of these services. Southtech also maintains the geographical information system (GIS) maps.
