Council will liaise with and involve Pacific Island community representatives and members of communities within the District in its decision-making processes, where relevant. Communication between Pacific Island communities, Councillors and Council staff is ongoing. Relationships and involvement opportunities extend over a wide range of festivals, events, issues and discussions.
Council intends to seek effective and appropriate communication in the future. Councillors and staff are part of a continuous learning programme in the continuous evolving of better communication with local community groups.
In terms of this Plan, specific consultation opportunities include proposed Long Term Council Community Plan (formally, the Annual Plan) meetings with Cook Island and Samoan communities. Other opportunities will arise, as situations occur, for these and Fijian, Tongan and other Pacific Island community groups to work with Council. The contribution of Pacific Island communities with planning processes is highly valued by Council because of the community’s strong and large presence in the District.
These same communication principles apply to other ethnic groupings within the District.
